New Volvo extended range plug-in hybrid models are now available

The Volvo lineup of plug-in hybrid Recharge models has just been significantly improved with the arrival of new extended range plug-in hybrid models. Available across the Volvo Recharge line up, the extended range models deliver more all-electric capability and a significant improvement in functionality.

Depending on the model, owners will enjoy between 58 and 64 km of all-electric range, an improvement of between 79% and 100% of the range of previous Volvo Recharge models. This improvement in capability stems from the fact that there is a new long-range battery in the Recharge T8 all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid powertrain that jumps from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh. The increase in capacity also comes with a more powerful rear electric motor that delivers 143 horsepower, up from 87 horsepower. That means that the T8 all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid powertrain now delivers 455 horsepower, making it by far the most powerful vehicle ever produced by Volvo.

The table below shows the increase in range for all of the available Volvo Recharge models.

The improvements in range aren't the only thing it comes with the latest generation of Volvo Recharge models. The improved capacity of the battery means that even when the car is not plugged in, drivers are able to pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin remotely via the Volvo Cars app without sacrificing all-electric range. The all-wheel drive system is also improved thanks to an upgraded e-motor and new Volvo Recharge models now feature one-pedal driving capability.

“Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles play an important role in the shift to electrification,” said Matt Girgis, managing director, Volvo Car Canada. “These upgraded powertrains will demonstrate the many benefits of an electric future and will serve as an enabling technology that will encourage more consumers to adopt the electric lifestyle.”
